El Dorado student blames counselor for missing grades

EL PASO, Texas —

The father of an El Dorado High School student claims a counselor's mistake at El Dorado High School is causing his daughter's GPA to drop and costing her potential opportunities.

Alex Diaz said his daughter, Viana Diaz, missed her end-of-semester exams in Killeen,Texas, because he was given an order to work at Fort Bliss.

"If it wasn't for the mistake that the school (made), she would have had the potential to even had a higher GPA and better colleges, better schools, scholarships, and right now she is being hindered because of a mistake," said Diaz

Because she missed her final exams Viana was given zeros for her final test scores and her grade for that semester dropped to about an 85.

At this point so much time has passed, her old school cannot help.

Socorro Independent School District officials said they have to follow policy and cannot change the scores of zeros for that semester.

"We cannot change a grade. Once a grade has been finalized and some credit has been awarded, by law you cannot change it, said Pat O'Neill, assistant superintendent for SISD.

The district had no control over the zeros placed on her transcripts.

But the principal at El Dorado has tried to help.

According to Diaz, his daughter has been given the option of taking a set of online courses, a semester's worth, to boost her scores.

"Why should my daughter be penalized?" said Diaz.

The option of taking online courses to help boost her GPA is worrisome because she is already taking a full set of classes.

"I'd be asking those same questions and that's the reason I'm reaching out and saying to him to call me," said O'Neill.

Diaz said his daughter has applied to UTEP and hopes to pursue a career in graphic design.
