Easy-Access Home For The Disabled

From the outside it looks like your typical northeast El Paso home, but a closer look reveals the house at 3729 Wickham is much more.

"They are meant for people with disabilities to be able to come and visit, and/or if you already own the home, and you become disabled, then you are able to stay in the home," said Tajauna Arnold with Easy Living Home Texas.

The home's accessibility begins outside.

"What you'll find in an easy living home is a ramp into the home that has no less than a half-inch space between the threshold, and the entry way into the home," said Jose Gutierrez with Las Brisas Homes.

Once inside, the hallways are larger, as well as the doorways which are at least 32 inches wide, easily wheelchair accessible.

One of the key features of an easy access home is the bathroom. It features plenty of area for a wheelchair to turn around. Reinforced walls allow grab bars to be put in later.

With all of the modifications, the common belief is an easy access home would cost more. But it would be much more expensive to make the additions later.

"To make a home accessible up front, usually costs about $250, to go back and retrofit is probably going to cost $2,500," said Arnold.

Jose Gutierrez, who lives in central El Paso, said the house is appealing to him, and he believes it will be to many others.

"Kids have their parents living with them, or they want to take care of their parents, they don't want to put them in a nursing home or whatever, so a lot of the homes that they will be staying at they need to have these conveniences," said Gutierrez.

The house is the third easy living home certified in El Paso, and is up for sale for $113,000. In Texas, the only other cities that have certified homes are Austin and Houston.
