LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

The early voting numbers are in for the Dona Ana County primary Tuesday and there wasn't much of a turnout.

"I just don't think the interest is there," Dona Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins said.

Only 3,504 people have cast their ballots through early voting out of around 110,000 registered voters.

"I don't really have any big thoughts about it," Las Crucen Bob White said. "I'm not much interested."

Primaries usually have a lower turnout than general elections but Ellins said this is even worse than usual.

"These are especially low because there's nothing at the top of the ticket," Ellins said.

Eleven races are Tuesday, including the state Senate District 36 race between incumbent Mary Jane Garcia and Oscar Butler.

There's also the County Commission 5 race between three candidates, two of which are sitting commissioners.

Plus, there's the U.S. Senate race between Martin Heinrich and Hector Balderas.

But Ellins said a big part of the problem is that some of the major races are already focusing on November at this point.

"I think it's because the presidential races have both been decided," Ellins said.

But even though the numbers are low, not everyone is brushing the primary off.

"I'm voting," Las Crucen Bob Magruder said. "We feel it's needed. We've got a new senator coming up in this state and there's some new representatives."

Thirty-nine polling sites are in the county and voters can now go to any precinct to vote. The polls open at 7 a.m.
