Early Voting Begins For Local Races

EL PASO, Texas —

Early voting begins Monday and runs through May 5. Nearly 350,000 voters are registered in El Paso County; so long lines are projected on the May 9 election day.

"I know at the far east side, it does get really packed on elections," said Mary Hernandez.

30 percent of voters cast their ballots early in the last election.

"The presidential election was something historical," said Hernandez. "I don't think there will be as much people for voting though [this election]."

Others believe results from the November elections will actually encourage voter turnout.

"More minorities are actually going to go out and vote since President Obama was elected," said Oscar Vargas, of East El Paso. "Now they know that their vote actually counts."

Some feel that the upcoming local races matter even more.

"Something that makes a change here within El Paso rather than throughout the United States," said Hernandez. "I would consider the change would be needed here locally rather than anywhere else."

Still, some want to hold off on voting for now.

"Right now, I'm not really informed of the situation," said Vargas. "So I first would like to inform myself more."

The May 9 election includes the race for Mayor in El Paso, Anthony and Horizon City. It also includes school board elections for the El Paso, Socorro and Ysleta I.S.D.s.
