DWI Charge Could Cost You $16,000

June 30, 2006 —

Chances are your Fourth of July plans involve fireworks, but if you plan on mixing them with booze, troopers want you to know how much it could cost you.

Even if the risk of death is not enough to keep you from behind the wheel, the Texas Department of Transportation wants you to realize that a DWI arrest for a first-time offender in El Paso could cost an amazing $16,000.

The fees of being arrested include everything from court costs, paying your lawyer and, if possible, paying to have your license renewed.

"We want people to not only be aware of the fact that they might be paying these expenses, but we are also out there to save lives, to remind people that there are alternatives when you go out there," said Monica O'Kan, a traffic safety specialist with TX-DOT.

Here is a quick look at just a handful of the costs associated with being arrested for drunken driving in El Paso.

A conviction will cost you between $700 and $2,000.

Attorneys' fees can cost anywhere from $750 to $5,000.

Keeping your driver's license will cost you more than $1,000 every year for three years.
