Dryer Lint May Cause Fire Danger

EL PASO, Texas —

The lint that accumulates inside your dryer can cause a fire inside your home.

This spring, it's already happened twice in El Paso.

Julian Lopez lives five doors down from a home that was consumed by flames two months ago. El Paso Fire officials said the clothes dryer is to blame for the blaze that displaced one family.

"I felt bad that I couldn't help. We had all the equipment here and we couldn't do anything about it," said Lopez.

Lopez said the day of the fire was the same day he got his business, Ventech Services, up and running. He's trying to educate people about a hidden danger inside their homes.

"Lint is very flammable. Lint is everywhere, inside your dryer, in the back of your dryer and inside your walls,” said Lopez.

"The duct inside is like mine, it went up through the wall and up to the roof but it was broken inside."

Fire officials said this year they have had two dryer fires and the combined damages were $200,000. Officials said if people don't know about this danger there will be more.

"You have to make sure that there's no blockage. Once this catches fire, it's going to catch quickly. It's going to catch really, really fast," said Lopez.
