Drug Violence Hearing: Now What?

EL PASO, Texas —

The former presidential hopeful and chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, came to El Paso for a reason.

"I think it is critical for us to turn the tables. I'm frustrated and frankly angry about it," Kerry told a throng of reporters.

Kerry said he wants solutions, and he was told from six different experts the federal government needs to do more in a field hearing on the UTEP campus on Monday.

"We have to go back and provide resources. We have to make sure that we follow through on the full funding of the Merida initiative, we have to make sure that we get the agents down here that are necessary," said Kerry.

El Paso District Attorney Jaime Esparza believes something will come out of Monday's hearing.

"This is clearly a great step in the right direction to make sure that one they know that we're concerned, and it's also a good indication that they're concerned, because they are willing to come all this way to hear what we have to say," he said.

With the field hearing at the UTEP campus Monday, some UTEP students were excited to see what was taking place on their campus.

"The fact that several major political figures from D.C. took the time to come out to El Paso, really shows that the war on drugs is very important to the well being of the United States," said Xavier Cadena, a UTEP sophomore.

But he disagrees with Esparza that real change will come from Monday's hearing.

"It would take huge steps to be stopped, and I don't think that the United States or Mexico has the ability or is really ready to be able to progress to the goal of eliminating the war on drugs," Cadena told KFOX.
