Drivers Confused At Cotton And Murchison

February 28, 2007 —

Drivers who travel near Cotton and Murchison streets may have noticed the confusion among some drivers.

Some KFOX viewers have complained about the lack of markings on those two streets.

"There's only two, three lanes there," said Northeast El Paso resident Hilda Almanza, not sure of her answer.

Many drivers aren't sure how many lanes there should be. On one stretch of Murchison, the lanes look like they're really wide. Some drivers treat this as a two-lane street, and others don't.

"One lane should be just for turning and the other to pass people who are turning. But people don't pay attention to it and drive in the middle," said Northeast resident Felipe Gallegos.

A KFOX photographer observed one driver in a white Toyota pickup made a turn on to Murchison but was not sure where in the street he should have been.

"I think there is a potential for a hazard here in this area," said Gallegos.

KFOX talked to the Street Department and asked if something was missing in the area. Officials said this is still a work in progress.

"The area we're discussing, the lines still need to be placed," said Katherine Palafox with the city's Street Department.

Palafox quickly dispatched a unit to the location to assess the situation and set the record straight.

"People called in and it was a hazard, and they were concerned not knowing if it's one lane. It's actually two lanes," said Palafox.

Palafox explained there's a delay in this project because of the extensive amount of road repair there's been since the 2006 floods. The city contracted with a company on this road repair project a year ago.

The city has notified the contractor, and the markings are something that will be addressed.

Palafox said white lines to mark the lanes will be placed soon, but in the meanwhile drivers should take precaution.

The city's Streets Department encourages drivers to report problem areas to the department at 621-6750.
