Double Accident Closes Freeway For Hours

Retired Truck Driver Warns Commuters to Watch Out

By Irene Melchor

EL PASO, Texas —

Police closed traffic heading westbound on interstate 10 Thursday evening following a semi-truck rollover, but that was only the beginning of the storm.

The wet weather caused at least six accidents in matter of hours.

According to witnesses, just before 9 p.m. a driver on I-10 heading westbound near the Hawkins off-ramp cut in front of a double trailer semi. When the driver of the semi tried to swerve, the two trailers jack-knifed causing the truck to roll.

The accident closed the westbound lanes, but a couple hours later another, a few motorists traveling eastbound were distracted by the rollover and caused an accident on the opposite of the freeway.

None of the drivers had serious injuries. The drivers involved in the first accident were taken to the hospital for evaluation. Two of the drivers in the second accident declined medical treatment, but one driver went to the hospital as well.

Cars were stuck on the freeway for more than 5 hours. According to rescue crews, one woman stuck in traffic was trying to get to the hospital because she was in labor. Crews were able to get her into an ambulance and to the hospital.

A number of people pulled over on the side of the road to take pictures of the accident.

A retired truck driver, who pulled over to offer help at the scene, said it's harder to stop when you're driving such a big truck.

"You can't stop on a dime, especially on a wet road," said Ruben, who only offered his first name. "The trailer shifts one way and your truck shifts another. It's like a runaway freight train."
