Dona Ana Jail Too Full For Minor Offenders

EL PASO, Texas —

In the last few weeks the Dona Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces has not been accepting nonviolent offenders, reported the Associated Press, because it doesn't have room.

Crimes such as littering, being a public nuisance, trespassing, possessing less than an ounce of marijuana, gambling, driving without a license or insurance and low-dollar amounts of fraud or shoplifting are now being handled by authorities with citations being issued.

However, people who would be a threat to the public are still being taken in, said detention center deputy director Samuel Heredia.
