Dona Ana County Addresses Teen Pregnancy

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Several Dona Ana County health officials are receiving training prior to going forward with plans to address high rates of teenage pregnancy in several communities.

According to Silvia Sierra of the Health and Human Services department, the initiative was developed after county residents identified teen pregnancy as one of the top health-care priorities.

After an intensive one-year pilot program, several communities within the county were found to have the highest teen pregnancy rates.

Officials describe the areas as Mesilla Park, Hatch, Vado, Mesquite, Salem and Las Cruces.

Health care officials plan to target those areas going into homes to educate parents and their children about sex and sexually transmitted diseases.

Organizers are set to begin that project after training is conducted in about three weeks.
