EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso Police officer Orlando Diaz, a 22-year veteran, was called to assist a fellow officer at a home on Feb. 20. Diaz said he felt threatened by the homeowner’s dog, Tyson, and was forced to shoot her twice.

Tyson was later put to sleep as a result of her injuries.

Tyson’s owner, Maribel Armendariz, describes her as a peaceful, well-trained dog. She said the Doberman Pinscher has been a part of the family for the past six years.

“My daughter trained her not to jump on people. She was an inside dog,” Armendariz said.

El Paso Police Department spokesman Chris Mears said the matter is under investigation but initial reports don’t show that Diaz did anything wrong.

"The officer was being chased down the driveway by the dog and nowhere to go and escape,” Mears said. “The dog was getting closer and by the time the officer fired the round, the dog had actually leaped into the air to attack the officer.”

Armendariz said the officer should’ve used a baton or a Taser.
