LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

After hearing a vehicle with a loud muffler and gunshots, Juan Figueroa went outside his home on the 9400 block of Sirius Street to see what the fuss was about.

Around midnight Monday, Figueroa found Max, the family collie-mix, with a bullet wound in the chest lying in the yard, according to Dona Ana County Sheriff's officials.

The family took the dog to the vet, but because they could not afford treatment, they took Max home.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the sheriff's office at 575-525-8882.
