EL PASO,Texas —
All she wanted was happily ever after, and instead one woman is left scrambling to find music for her wedding.
Shannon Gherke met her Prince Charming at an El Paso car wash at which she works. After dating for three years, her now-husband popped the question.
"Two years, cost us $15,000," said Gherke, about saving for her wedding.
She and her fiancé saved until they could finally afford their dream wedding and perfect DJ.
"We contacted several times after that to make sure that he had the songs, the music we wanted, specific songs to walk in to," she said.
Gherke and her fiancé ended up hiring Joe, from Fiesta Disco DJ Service. She thought all she had left to do was to walk down the aisle, but the day before her big day she received unexpected news.
"It was about 3 p.m. It was via text message and he just said, 'I’m sorry to do this to you," said Gherke.
Joe cancelled, but he did agree to pay her back her deposit and the difference for having to find a DJ last minute.
"When I said 'OK bring me the money' he said, 'Wait; I don't have it til Wednesday,'" she said.
So, Gherke scrambled to pay for a new DJ.
"We literally had to go through our cards to get the money, ask family members to borrow it," she said.
Even then the confusion ruined her night.
"Having to go up to the DJ and say, "Wait, do you have this?' when we had already gone over all the details with the other DJ," said Gherke.
Gherke thought the contract she signed with Joe would protect her from cancellation or at least guarantee she'd get her money back.
"When you sign a contract, that's it -- it's in writing. There's no going back on it," she said.
KFOX 14 reporter Martina Valverde called Joe, and he told her he had a fight with his business partner and had no choice but to cancel. He said right now he has no job and can't pay her back, but he is trying to get a loan to do so.
Gherke said he wasn't answering her calls or texts, but once KFOX 14 called him, he answered her back and said he’d have the money by Friday.
KFOX 14 spoke to longtime event planner Cody Alcon, of EYT Events Planning and Catering Co., and he said every contract is different. Alcon said the key to not ending up in Gherke's shoes is to research and have an event planner.
"Like they have a place where they conduct their business; their phone lines are business lines," he said.
Alcon said he realizes not every bride can afford an event planner. That’s why he said he publishes “Brides and Quince,” a magazine available across town. In it he says he advertises the top trusted companies to handle any details of a wedding and also provide tips for brides.
