EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police said Daniel Saenz was shot and killed by an officer on Friday evening after he became combative with the officer during a transfer to a hospital.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. outside the El Paso County Jail.

Police said an officer was transferring Saenz, 37, to a hospital because of a medical condition when he became violent and the officer had to fire his gun at the inmate.

First aid was given to Saenz at the scene. He then was transported to an area hospital where he died.

According to police, the inmate had been booked into the jail on several charges including assault on a public servant, assault causing bodily injury and injury to an elderly person.

At this time, the Texas Rangers, the El Paso Police Department's shooting review team and crimes against persons unit are conducting the investigation.
