EL PASO, TEXAS —
The shut-off date is Feb., 17, and without a converter box many regular television viewers will not see what they see now when turning on the TV.
It's a new beginning for television, and the converter boxes will be the difference between getting all your news, weather, sports and favorite TV shows.
”It bothers me that I know people that have antenna TVs still, that aren't on cable. I don't think they understand that it's going to go away and really go away,” said West El Paso resident Linda Joyce.
The government is now warning that if you don't order discount coupon for a converter box soon, they might be out.
“A lot of people, unfortunately, are procrastinating, and we're trying to get the word out to make sure people don't do that. There is a limited number of coupons available, period,” said Nichole Villalobos with KFOX Programming.
Orders for the boxes are hitting record highs now, so the increase in demand will mean delays in getting the box.
“It takes six weeks to get your coupon once you do apply for it, Villalobos said.
Some said there is one generation that might need a little push in ordering the coupon or the box.
“My parents, I don't think have a DTV- ready TV, so hopefully they will be ready for TV,” said Valerie Escandon, of West El Paso.
Those who are already regular cable or satellite viewers can get upgrades from their providers, but those with rabbit ears might soon miss out.
“You only get your two per household, that's it. If you let it expire, you're going to be on your own. You can still get your converter box; you just have to pay for it completely out of pocket,” Villalobos said.
If you’re looking to order a converter box coupon, scroll down to the DTV conversion link.
