LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Police said a 23-year-old man armed with a knife was shot by a police officer Wednesday afternoon.

The officer-involved shooting happened around 1 p.m. at a residence on the 500 block of Corona Del Campo Loop in Las Cruces.

Police said officers were responding to a trespassing call and found a man with a knife. The man refused to drop the knife and approached the officer in a threatening manner, police said.

The officer fired at least once and struck the man, police said.

The man was airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer, a five-year veteran, was placed on administrative leave as per standard protocol.
