Despite Rain, Spectators Headed To Thanksgiving Parade

EL PASO, Texas —

Early morning showers didn't keep thousands from enjoying the 72nd annual First Light Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl parade. Many made sure they were prepared.

"I brought this thick jacket that I hardly ever wear. A scarf that I never wear and raincoats, umbrellas,” said Cynthia Alfaro, of East El Paso, as she showed us her winter gear.

Come rain or shine, thousands lined up along Montana Avenue making sure they got front row seats. Though not as cold as expected, some made sure to bundle themselves up, as well as their four-legged friends.

"It's a beautiful day. I travel a lot. I came from Colorado and it was actually really cold out there,” Victor Ramirez of West El Paso said.

This year more than 3,000 participated in the Thanksgiving parade, including animals like the horses from the Sheriff's Posse.

There was also an increase in floats, making it the most they've had in the past 35 years. From the bands to the Sun Bowl court, spectators enjoyed it all. And even while enjoying the parade, El Pasoans made sure they donated to the less fortunate.

"Who wouldn't want turkey? Who wouldn't want Thanksgiving,” said 6-year-old Edgar Medina Jr. as he donated cans of food to the West Texas Food Bank.

"It's actually all thanks to him that we went and walked over and bought some more cans," said his father, Edgar Medina. "I think you have to, you have to give. And especially if you can, cans are so inexpensive.

This year the West Texas Food Bank provided Thanksgiving dinners for 5,000 families.
