EL PASO, Texas —
The Texas Department of Transportation is preparing for the winter storm that will hit the borderland area Thursday morning.
The storm is expected to create dangerous road conditions and TX-DOT has their equipment lined up to start spreading salt on the roads by 4 a.m.
They want to remind drivers that there can be black ice and drivers need to take their time while crossing over any bridges because they are the first to freeze. People also need to drive on the right lane.
"Please don't try to pass us, either," said Hector Granados with TX-DOT.
Another piece of advice, Granados said, is that drivers need to avoid staying at a stand-still because the lack of traction is what causes the ice build-up.
The main roads that will be covered with a salt and sand mix are Interstate 10, Spur 601 and Loop 375.
Crews will be working around the clock on Thursday for the snow storm, which is expected to last until Friday morning.
Meanwhile, El Paso Water Utilities said they are not anticipating major damage like there was during the 2011 freeze. However, they do want people to be aware of where their water meters are and how to shut off their water valve.
"It's better to be safe than sorry," said Martin Bartlett, spokesman for El Paso Water Utilities.
