Dangerous Fugitives Surrender

Feb. 24, 2006 —

The two suspects both committed separate crimes back in January and since then fled to Mexico, but tonight they are both behind bars.

It is at the city's Port of Entries where C-B-P Officers say they come face to face with some of the worst criminals. On Thursday night they met with 19 year old Giovani Alvarado who is wanted for the murder of a Canutillo man. "He was a passenger in a vehicle and he immediately identified himself as a wanted suspect in a homicide in Canutillo," says Roger Maier with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. But the surrender of Alvarado isn't anything new for authorities. They say fugitives who want to find refuge in Mexico have a false fantasy of what living there is really like. If you don't have a support system in place if you don't know the language, the customs, there's no way to support yourself it gets old in a hurry, says Maier.

Just three hours after Alvarado surrendered at the El Paso Del Norte Bridge, something very unusual happens, another high profile criminal also turns himself in. This time its 27 year old David Carbajal wanted for a January shooting at the East El Paso Bravo Dealership. Authorities say although it's unusual for two fugitives to surrender on the same bridge, the very same day the news is a sign of progress.
