Customs Officials React To Radioactive Material

March 28, 2006 —

Now a follow-up to a story KFOX first brought you Monday night.

KFOX reported how undercover congressional investigators said they managed to get radioactive material through ports of entry in Texas and Washington state.

The investigators say it was enough Cesium 1-37 to make two so-called "dirty bombs".

They add that while the material triggered radiation alarms, Customs and Border Protection officers allowed it through after they were given fake documentation.

Tuesday the El Paso office of Customs and Border Protection released a statement.

"The bottom line is that raw material was allowed into the country using fictitious Nuclear Regulatory Commission documents. CBP is strengthening this process, working with the NRC to ensure that we have the ability to validate NRC documentation through our national targeting center 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Roger Maier, with Customs and Border Protection.

The Bush administration says that process should be completed nationwide within about six weeks.
