Crosswalk Signal Malfunction At Deadly El Paso Intersection

EL PASO, Texas —

While father of Shaneise Quinonez-Burks, 14, mourns her loss, residents who live near Airway and Edgemere Boulevard worry another tragedy could happen at the busy intersection because they said the crosswalk signals don't work properly.

Sunday night, Quinonez-Burks was struck as she walked across the busy intersection. She later died at the hospital from her injuries.

El Paso Police are currently investigating the crash. Investigators said Quinonez-Burks and her friends were using the crosswalk, but didn't have the right of way.

Loreyn Workman contacted KFOX after seeing the story. She and others cross the busy intersection several times on a daily basis because Burges High School is up the street.

Workman said she's often left waiting several minutes for the crosswalk signal to change.

"It's very difficult to cross the street, not only because it's very busy, but because the crosswalk signals don't work. If you do press the button, you have to wait two lights (cycles) for it to work, and you have 10 seconds to get across two busy intersections," said Workman, who has also been struck at this intersection.

"If the light's not functioning well, if you walk and another hand goes up, they need to reset these lights immediately. Otherwise, there's going to be more accidents and more fatalities here. They need to correct this problem," said Bennett Burks, the victim's father.

KFOX contacted the Street Department, but no one returned the call.

A viewing for Shaneise Quinonez-Burks will take place Sunday, at Crestview Funeral Home, 1462 N. Zaragoza Rd. from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. A service will be held at 7 p.m.

The burial will take place Monday, at Evergreen East Cemetery, 12400 E. Montana Ave., at 11 a.m.
