County Support Sought For Official's Immigration Resolution

EL PASO, Texas —

Jaime O. Perez, who is the El Paso County Judge's chief of staff, said his job was to assess U.S/Mexico counties and get input from other county judges about how to handle the border violence.

As a result, he produced a document titled the Texas Immigration Bill. In it he makes recommendations, similar to the Arizona immigration bill, to check people's identification.

He said it's a safety issue because the border violence is out of control and not to act is irresponsible.

"My recommendation was that we should something similar to what Arizona did in the sense that we need to just control our borders. We need to know who is here, how they're coming in and what they're doing," said Perez.

Texas Sen. Eliot Shapleigh said there's other ways to tackle immigration issues.

"We've never done that in America. It violates every single basic issue of fairness and equality. What Perez did is create this law and have El Paso county sponsor it," said Shapliegh.

Perez will submit the resolution and ask for the support of the County Legislative Committee next week. But he said with that entity's support or not, he is submitting the resolution to the Texas Legislature.

County Commissioner Veronica Escobar, who is running against Perez for the county judge seat reacted to his comments.

"This is a federal issue, the feds need to deal with it. They haven't dealt with it adequately, but that doesn't mean that states should be enacting reactionary laws that are unconstitutional, and frankly, that end up costing significant amounts of money," said Escobar.

Escobar believes if local authorities are enforcing federal laws it will end up increasing crime in the area.

But Perez maintains that the issue is not profiling, it's about safety.

"The question is, do we have open borders like commissioner Escobar and Senator Shapliegh want? Where you don’t check on anyone and anyone can just walk around like we’re having in Juarez, where they’re just murdering people in super markets and churches,” said Perez.

Shapleigh believes it is racial profiling and Perez is doing it to throw his name in the political arena.

"He is sending this big resolution out and circulating it all over Austin and frankly, it's an embarrassment. I think he's doing it for political gain," said Shapleigh.
