County Leaders Work To Build Mental Health Services In El Paso

Work is under way to get mentally ill children the help they need. This comes in the heels of a county-wide federal investigation into bribery and corruption in El Paso.

Currently, the county is fighting to get $625,000 from a consulting company, LKG Enterprises

LKG and its president, Ruben "Sonny" Garcia, are among the ones named in an FBI search warrant.

While the court tries to recover its money, some county leaders are making changes to a broken system.

On Friday, KFOX has uncovered plans by a group called the Border Children's Health Collaborative to build a place in El Paso that will offer helpful medical services that aren't provided now. The program is financed by a $9.3 million federal grant.

At 15 years old, Johnny Marez lived at the Juvenile Probation Department. It turns out he suffered from a mental illness.

"They had to send Johnny away. They didn't have a place here in El Paso for Johnny," said Maria Marez, his grandmother.

Treatment took place hundreds of miles away in San Antonio, where he spent almost a year.

"The treatment over there was hard. They expected you to do things that you see your family helping you," said Johnny Marez.

Hundreds of local kids find themselves -- just like Johnny -- alone, needing help and far from home. Every year, millions of dollars leave El Paso to follow the children who are forced away.

County Commissioner Dan Haggerty said a company called LKG Enterprises was hired to help.

"(Instead)$5 million were spent out of that grant of $9-point-whatever million. Very few children, if any, were serviced," said Haggerty.
