February 26, 2006 —

An El Paso County judge is expected to approve a multi-agency task force against Internet sexual predators.

The El Paso County Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force would maximize interagency cooperation and formalize relationships between member agencies.

Like most parents, Alicia Mayer said she has concerns about which websites kids are getting into.

Carolina Orozco said she become so concerned she canceled her Internet service at home.

"I worry about sites that have pornography and other sites that can be harmful," said Orozco.

The mission of the El Paso County ICAC Task Force is to investigate, apprehend and prosecute Internet sexual predators. The task force will participate in community education efforts regarding the prevention of Internet crimes against children.

While some parents agree it's their responsibility to talk to their children, they say it's nice to know there will be more help for them.

"That's a good idea. They're getting more involved and there's so many bad people out there, so they need to," said Orozco.

The task force will be funded by a grant from the Department of Justice and the Office of Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention.

The parties involved are the Anthony, Clint, Horizon and Socorro police departments, El Paso Community College and the Socorro Independent School District Police.
