County Commissioner diagnosed with bladder cancer

Dan Haggerty considers stepping down

By David Natividad

EL PASO,Texas —

El Paso County Commissioner Dan Haggerty stopped by the KFOX-14 studios on Thanksgiving to announce that he has bladder cancer.

The 63-year old Haggerty said he decided to make the announcement after groups began asking people to pray for him on the Internet. He said he found out on Tuesday that he has a tumor in his bladder and that it is still unknown if he will undergo chemotherapy or if he will lose his bladder. He said he does know he will lose his right kidney as early as next week.

“I’m gonna fight it. I’ll fight it as much as I can, but if it gets to be too much then I know that I have to step down. It’s a big job being a commissioner,” said Haggerty.

Haggerty also pointed out that he isn’t in a rush to resign from his seat and is thankful for the El Pasoans who have elected him five times. Haggerty, the only Republican on the Commissioners Court, was elected to his seat in 1994.

“I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of being able to serve. It’s been real flattering. I’m real lucky. I hope I did a good job,” said Haggerty.
