County Approves International Hotel Funding

January 30, 2006 —

It wasn't a unanimous decision but the International Hotel is one step closer to getting county support for renovations.

County commissioners voted 5-2 Monday to allow the use of county funds to revitalize the downtown hotel that's been closed for years.

As KFOX has reported, the El Paso City Council has already tentatively approved a 10-year tax-break package that would also give the hotel's developer $900,000 in revitalization funds.

County leaders tell KFOX even though the plan is approved they won't implement their end of the bargain until the city irons out last minute questions regarding future funding and parking issues.

Not all commissioners agree with the project.

"I think that this is absolutely a financial decision that takes taxes out of the mouths of our taxpayers. He's improving the property -- he's a private business man. It's just not right," said El Paso County Commissioner Dan Haggerty.

Building inspectors say it will take $15 million to get the International Hotel in good enough condition to re-open.
