EL PASO, Texas —
Charter amendments will be headed to a ballot box near you after the city held a public meeting for input on proposed changes to the city charter Thursday
Those changes will be voted on in May.
Council went through every single proposed change, 54 in total, and narrowed it down to those that will be voted on in May.
The proposed amendments came from council members and community members.
A review committee of community members went through every proposal and gave their recommendations to council on Tuesday.
Thursday, city officials approved a proposal that would change elections from May to November hoping this would have a better voter turnout.
The changes wont universaly take effect until 2020, said City Manager Joyce Wilson, but it will mean those elected in 2017 will hold 3½-year terms.
Also being adding to the charter is that after the next official census, if the population of El Paso exceeds one million, the city may decide to add two more city representatives.
There will also be a proposed change to the council's and mayor's salary to increase it to the U.S. Housing and Urban Development median income for a family of four for council members. The HUD median income is currently $42,000.
The mayor's salary would be a 150 percent of that.
It won't effect the current council; only incoming new reps.
Council is hoping this will attract more qualified candidates to run for positions.
It would also mean that the salaries would increas and decrease with the median income automatically. If the median income goes down, so will salaries. If the median income goes up, the reps and mayor will automatically recieve a raise.
On Tuesday, council will vote on the actual wording of the proposed ordinances as they will appear on the ballot.
Proposed amendments that won't appear on the ballot: increasing required signatures for recalls and initatives and reducing council terms from four years to two.
