Cotton Crop Facing Loss

November 26, 2006 —

Cotton fields in the Dona Ana and El Paso counties are still feeling the affects of the 2006 floods.

Part of a cotton farm in Vado, N.M., was underwater for a while after the 2006 floods. Wade Deerman, the owner, said the water washed up a lot of dirt and debris into his fields about two months ago. Now some of the ground is still wet.

"Our averages are going to be about 20-30 percent down on our crop this year," said Deerman.

Wade's farm by far is not the only one affected but he said his farm got hit hard twice this summer.

Wade said he won't be able to harvest a 9-acre cotton field because it was badly damaged by the hail, wind and rain.

One 19-acre field was over taken by the weeds and another has 2 feet of dirt.

"The main problem is where the water washed into it. Some of the ground is still wet. It's not going to support the machines when they come get the harvest."

The field now has a lot of loose sand and there's a great chance this large piece of machinery can get stuck in the sand. Wade said he doesn't know what the financial impact will be until next year.

"It's going to be a financial disaster as well as a physical to the property. It's going to take a lot of repair," said Wade.
