Coronado students hit the voting polls again

By Kandolite Flores

EL PASO, Texas —

They're too young to vote but they're out at the polls to figure out for whom El Pasoans are voting for during the early voting period.

Some politically savvy Coronado High School students are conducting another exiting poll after a successful prediction during the primary elections.

A group of 48 students hit the polls for the primary and predicted former city representative Beto O'Rourke would win against U.S Rep. Silvestre Reyes in the 16th congressional race.

They're now looking at who will win moved up the general election.

Seventy students were out at 14 different voting stations throughout El Paso Monday and almost 800 voters took the time to fill out their survey.

Gary Berglund, a history teacher at Coronado, helps organize the polling but said the students put it all together on their own, choose what questions will go on the survey and compile the data and predictions.

"A lot of people think that if you can't vote, you can't do anything. So the students came up with the idea, several different ideas over the last couple of years to get students more involved even though they can't vote," he said.

Jasleen Sakur is a junior and one of the leaders of the group. She tells KFOX14 what students are looking at this time around.

"We're definitely looking at the congressional race and trying to see if we can find any similarities between what happened in May and what's happening today versus people switching parties and switching people," she said.

Berglund said although students were right on with the primary some voters didn't believe they're survey could be that accurate.

"I don't know if their perspective would be different if we were adults. Or perhaps they were just discontented by the outcome of the poll but we did everything by the book just like the pollsters around the nation did it," said Sakur.

The students have predictions for the presidential race and the congressional race but they'll be back out at the polls Saturday and are going to wait for those surveys before making a call.

Sakur said exit polling has really spiked an interest amongst her peers and they are planning on having more students at the polling station Election Day.
