LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A man who admitted to Border Patrol agents that he crossed over illegally was previously convicted of various sex crimes, officials said.

Fernando Efrain of Honduras was on a Greyhound bus at the Interstate 10 checkpoint when he told agents that he was in the county illegally and was traveling to Van Nuys, Calif., officials said.

After officials took Efrain into custody, they discovered that he was previously deported and had a criminal history. Efrain was charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, continuous sexual abuse of a child in 2002, and he had served two years of a three-year prison sentence in Los Angeles, officials said.

Efrain was booked into the Otero County Prison Facility for his illegal re-entry, and he will be deported to Honduras, officials said.

Officials said this arrest is an example of the impact being made on a regular basis by Border Patrol agents.
