SOCORRO, Texas —
More information is unveiled about a Socorro police officer who was one of four accused of official oppression.
Lt. Jose Alvarez is alleged to have made an arrest earlier this year without cause.
KFOX14 has acquired 429 pages of scanned documents regarding Alvarez's resignation from El Paso Police Department.
Alvarez was being investigated by the El Paso Police Department. He was suspected of using excessive force at the time he resigned in 2004.
In his resignation letter, Alvarez explains that he was leaving for personal reasons, but it came after El Paso police internal affairs showed that he was being investigated for allegations that he had hit a young man in the head with a flashlight while carrying out an arrest in 2003.
The investigation continued after Alvarez resigned and he was reportedly cleared of the excessive force allegations in El Paso, and he went to work for the Socorro Police Department.
Socorro city officials said they are standing by their officer in this latest case.
"Lt. Alvarez is probably one of the most hard-nosed police officers that this city has ever had," said Dave Garcia, a spokesman for the city. "(He is) hard-nosed, strong, knows streets, is street savvy and knows how to run his department. His men respect him."
A separate excessive-force incident, which we reported on earlier this month, involved a man named Ricardo Landeros from Socorro.
Socorro city government settled that case without going to court but said it couldn't comment on how the case was settled.
