Consumer Watch: Find Organizers That Stack Up Best

Who doesn't like the idea of a neat and tidy closet, but can you afford to pay thousands to get your closet chaos under control?

Now there are do-it-yourself closet organizers that can get the job done for much less. In this Consumer Watch Report, we have the results on which organizers performed well after they under went a series of tests.

Terry Voltaggio has a closet that could definitely use some organizing.

"Stuff hanging from the bars in plastic bags and stuff spilling out all over the floors," Voltaggio said.

Voltaggio said she would love to get it organized, but doesn't know where to start.

Consumer Reports' Pat Slaven just tested nine do-it-yourself closet organizing systems that range in price from $210 to $670. Slaven said some of the systems had serious drawbacks, whereas installation was a real problem for many others.

"We refer to it as a 'honey, we're getting a divorce' system. The shelves are very difficult to level. You have to get both sides even, and you're working in blind corners with a small Allen wrench," Slaven said.

And others, once assembled, didn't measure up. One system had drawers that didn't close properly, while another's drawers came off the tracks entirely. However, testers did find some do-it-yourself systems that were pretty good.

One with earned top ratings is from Rubbermaid. The organizer has handy wire baskets and was very easy to assemble. It sells at K-Mart and online at Amazon for $300, and can help keep your closet neat as a pin.

A system like this could help Voltaggio make order out of her current closet confusion.

Consumer Reports has helpful suggestions for a smooth installation of a closet organizer.

First of all, enlist a second set of hands. Having someone help you makes it much easier. Next, a cordless screwdriver or drill will make it a lot easier. And finally, before you start, check to see if you have all the parts -- several systems Consumer Reports tested were missing something.
