Construction To Begin On Lee Trevino

Less than two weeks ago the intersection of Lee Trevino and James Watt flooded. Those who use the intersection said it is an inconvenience, but so will the construction to fix the problem that starts on Wednesday.

"It's going to stink...I live right here close by, and I have to be in line all the time," said Jesus Escarsega, from East El Paso.

"It's going to affect me when I come to the gym, you know, my daily commute around here," said Caesar Salinas, from the Lower Valley.

Those who drive at Lee Trevino and James Watt are not looking forward to the two southbound lanes being closed at the beginning of construction. And those who work at Pet's Barn on the corner of the intersection are concerned about the impending road work.

"It's our gateway to customers pretty much," said Robert Barnes, a Pet's Barn employee.

Barnes and customers KFOX spoke to said Lee Trevino is already a traffic trouble spot.

"The way it goes right now, even with all the lanes open, it's crazy," said Barnes.

"Definitely one of the major, major traffic streets down here in El Paso," said Raul Nevrez, from Horizon City.

And with the construction, some worry it will only get worse.

"It will be a mess, I will say it will be a mess," said Nevrez.

Some customers said that because of the construction that goes on at Lee Trevino, they may not come through Pet Barn's doors, and that could affect their bottom line.

"I'm not going to spend half an hour to be just doing a little shopping around here, and taking 20 minutes going to another shopping center," said Nevrez.

"Two streets over is Pet's Smart, which is our biggest competition right now...If they close off the lanes, and people can't come through here, they'll probably go that way, which is really going to start hurting business," said Barnes.

While the construction is a nuisance now, ending the cycle of rain, flooding, and street closures will be a welcome change for Pet's Barn employees.

"If a little rain can cause that much chaos, then anything they can do to fix it is worth it," said Barnes.

KFOX spoke to a number of businesses in the area, and they all said they were surprised that there was construction, and said that they were not notified of anything taking place on Lee Trevino.

The city said that Lee Trevino will never be fully closed, and that construction is expected to be done by early September.
