Construction project runs longer than anticipated

People say they're fed up with the traffic

EL PASO, Texas —

People in El Paso's Lower Valley complained to KFOX about a construction project at a major intersection.

The project will prolong the life of the pavement at Yarbrough Drive and Alameda Avenue, and was originally started in September 2011.

The Alameda Re-Surfacing Project's limits are from Glenwood Street to Padres Drive. Winter weather brought the pavement project to a halt and it was supposed to start up again and be completed by early summer. The Texas Department of Transportation said that the contractor had trouble with materials, scheduling and other logistics.

Friday, TxDOT told KFOX that it hopes to be done with the project by the end of the month.

Adrian Morales lives in the Lower Valley and said even though he leaves the house early, he's starting to get irritated with the daily congestion.

"It's a real hassle," Morales said. "This has been going on for months."

Sandra Torres lives in East El Paso but travels on Alameda Avenue to visit her mother. She said what annoys her are the bumps in the road.

"If they're going fast, they can't really see the bumps on the road and it can mess up your car pretty bad," Torres said.

TxDOT said the project costs $2.4 million and the contractor will incur the liquidated damages.
