Construction on I-10 east caused heavy lines of traffic

Project scheduled for Sundays

Drivers experienced headaches on Sunday afternoon and into the evening as construction crews closed down the eastbound Interstate 10 between Airway and Geronimo.

Our news team stopped at the Geronimo traffic light, where the freeway ramp is closed off, to get reactions from drivers.

"It’s like three or four miles backed up and I don't even know if we've seen the worst of it yet,” said one driver visiting from Las Cruces, N.M.

“It’s never like this,” said one pan-handler at the corner. "Yeah, I've been sitting here and listening to them. Honk, honk, honk all is what I heard all afternoon.”

The backup is due to a new maintenance project to the Geronimo overpass. The project and its closures began this weekend and will continue every Sunday throughout June and July.

“It’s a Sunday so they're not doing it in the work week so that's good,” another commuter said.

“It's getting hotter and hotter in the car, you know. No air conditioning and the traffic like this impossible. Impossible to go any place,” said a woman on her way to Cielo Vista Mall.

The construction work begins at 3 a.m. Sunday and ends at 5 a.m. before the Monday commute begins.

The schedule can change depending on weather.
