Constables say they're in dire need of new vehicles

By Kandolite Flores

EL PASO, Texas —

To serve and protect isn't easy, especially if you don't have the proper tools to do it.

El Paso County Constable Luis Aguilar tells KFOX14 constables are in dire need of new vehicles because the ones they have now are beyond repair.

"They're all old vehicles. They've got over 100,000 miles on them. They're driven just about all day. They're a safety issue. We're scared of something happening involving an accident. What if we have a prisoner in the back and we can't get him out? We have several issues with them; brakes don't work, wipers don't work, one or two of the vehicles we have to jump start every morning, some of the electric doors don't open," said Aguilar.

This week, he spoke with county commissioners about these problems and getting new vehicles for the constables.

Commissioner Sergio Lewis agrees with Aguilar, but the county is already working on replacing vehicles for the Sheriff's Office.

"Constables quite frankly are an extension of the state law enforcement, and they deserve new vehicles, also," he said.

One of the possible options commissioners were looking at was rotating some of the sheriff's vehicles to the constables, but Lewis said they appear to be in the same shape.

"They really don't have a lot of confidence in that they should be used long-term for the constables or anybody else. They say they're the worse of the worse, and they're using the worse of the best. What's left is really not a whole lot of good, these vehicles have 300-400-plus miles on them," he said.

Lewis said commissioners will continue to look into other options.
