Computers, Doctors Work Together

Knee and hip surgery in Las Cruces just got more advanced and much less invasive.

Doctors at Mountain View Regional Medical Center told KFOX the computer-assisted surgery now makes knee and hip surgery more accurate than ever.

Compared to the past, where doctors used touch and feel to repair the bones, the computer told doctors exactly where the joints should meet.

"Now the outcome of that over the long term is that we expect devices put in. We expect devices to hold up over wear and tear that people put them through over the years, so they won't have to be replaced at 10 or 15 years as they have been when using the old equipment," said orthopedic surgeon Edward Sweetser.

Doctors said instead of a six-to-eight-week recovery period, patients are up and walking at four to six weeks.
