Community members blame new principal for high teacher turnover

Gadsden Independent School District

ANTHONY, New Mexico —

22 teachers have departed from Gadsden High School in the last year.

Teachers and parents, who did not want to be identified for fear of retaliation, are circulating a petition to have the new principal of the high school removed.

The principal, Lucia Servin, could not be reached for comment Friday or Saturday. Servin has served in her current position since August of 2011.

One if the petitioners spoke with KFOX14 News.

"(The departed teachers) were wonderful, qualified, well-educated people that loved our students and our school and now they're gone," the petitioner said. "And they didn't want to leave but they felt they had no other choice. I don't think our school will ever recuperate from all of the loss of personnel that we've suffered."

In a statement, Gadsden's Superintendent, Efren Yturralde, said, "The District has looked into staff departures at Gadsden High and Ms. Lucia Servin's performance, and has found no fault."

On the phone, Yturralde told KFOX that none of the teachers had been fired and that a group of about 80 people are trying to rally support for the principal.

The supporters claim that Servin is only trying to clean up a troubled school and that some faculty members are upset because they have been disciplined by her.

The petitioners said, regardless of the reason for their complaint, they have a right to have their voices heard.

"I'm here as a last resort," one teacher said. "We've tried petitions, we've sent letters."

Yturralde said he has yet to receive a formal complaint about the Servin and his statement said, "The 22 departures from the high school are based on various personal reasons which included retirements and the fact that many of those teachers sought new positions at the new high school in Las Cruces."
