Community meeting to discuss Montwood construction project to be held Monday

By Jesse Martinez

EL PASO, Texas —

The area near Eastwood High School and Montwood Drive may be a headache for drivers as a two-year construction project is expected to begin in December.

The construction is part of a drainage improvement project that consists of various improvements along Montwood Drive from McRae Boulevard to Zanzibar Drive, on Windrock Drive from Montwood Drive to the Eastwood Dam and on Honolulu Drive and Trinidad Drive.

A community meeting to discuss project details will be held Monday at 6 p.m. at Eastwood High School's theater located at 2430 McRae Blvd.

As KFOX14 previously reported, Sam Rodriguez, the city's engineering division manager, said the road is run down because it's heavily commuted and prone to flooding.

"Montwood is one of the major connectors that brings you into the Airways and Viscount area from the east side so it's heavily used and any time there's, rain you have standing water in the roadway. Basically there's a big drainage area that dumps into Montwood and the water tends to sit there, it doesn't flow out very well. Some residents actually have sand bags along their property line because they know that water could potentially flood up into their homes," said Rodriguez.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, improvements from this project include:

• New ADA-compliant sidewalks with standard curb, gutter and driveways

• Installation of storm sewer system

• Replacement of water and sanitary sewer lines

• New concrete roadway pavement

• Landscaping improvement

• Increase capacity at Eastwood Dam
