Cold Weather Brings Business Boom

Related

Cash registers at the Home Depot on N. Mesa have been sounding off non-stop for at least a week. Store managers said sales this week have been the best they've seen all season. They credit Thursdays expected freeze for the boost in business.

All of a sudden within the last two days with this cold snap that we had. Since then we've been stocking our shelves every night, said Charlie Estrada, a Home Depot employee.

I came out to find something to wrap my pipes, said Max Bolen who was picking up winterizing materials. Bolen said he's trying to insulate the pipes before they start giving him problems.

The best selling items, according to Estrada have been the window insulation kits and weather stripping for the doors. One item that Estrada said hasnt been that popular are outlet sealers. They look foam plates, and you place them between the outlet and the actual plate to prevent drafts from coming into the home.

Outlets are a big heat loss. They're not sealed, and if you put a match around an outlet you can see if it's flickering. That's an indicator that theres a draft and you need to seal that, said Estrada. This can also be done near windows and doors.

Remember, when you're able to keep the heat from leaving your home you'll be saving on your bill. Home winterizing materials, such as a long strip of foam pipe insulation and weather stripping are usually under five dollars, and last about two years.

The West Side Home Depot sold out of outdoor faucet covers, and associates said they wont have more until Monday. They said theyre stocked with other winterizing materials. Heaters are going fast, but they anticipate selling out soon.
