EL PASO, Texas —

Winter returned to the El Paso and Las Cruces region Thursday afternoon when dusty conditons made for hazardous conditions.

Drivers along I-10 from El Paso to Las Cruces dodged tumbleweeds and struggled with low visibility.

KFOX14 viewers from Santa Teresa in the McNutt Road area complained of power outages. El Paso Electric officials said they were not working on any outages in that area. However power lines went down around 12 p.m. in Northeast El Paso in the 3400 block of Volcanic. The El Paso Fire Department was also called to a possible transformer explosion near Vista del Sol and Yarbrough. Reports of outages there have not yet been confirmed.

TXDOT crews have not closed the Anthony Gap or Transmountain Road due to the winds but officials told KFOX14 the roads may be closed later this afternoon.

As KFOX Morning News weathercaster Brad Montgomery reported Thursday morning, a strong storm system moving through the area will bring very gusty winds. East and Northeast El Paso could see winds up to 60 miles per hour until about 6 p.m.

Light snow showers or flurries will be possible for El Paso and Las Cruces after the cold air moves into the area late Thursday afternoon through the overnight hours.
