CLINT, Texas —
The Clint Independent School District said by adding a drug dog it has added 30 to 40 drug busts a year. The district has owned its own dog for the last eight years.
The latest addition, a 14-month-old dog named Ice, was added to the security force just this week. District officials hope Ice will stop students from using drugs or bringing drugs on school campus.
"The most common drug we find is marijuana, about five times every three weeks," said Clint ISD Security Team member and dog handler David Harrison.
Ice is a specialized dog, trained to be friendly to staff, students, and parents.
"When Ice senses drugs, his tail starts wagging harder, his breathing is harder, and then you see his nose following the scent. That's when you see him do his own thing," Harrison said.
The dog may seem friendly to people, but he is aggressive in sniffing out heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and meth.
"If they are high or are on drugs, then they can't study or learn. Drugs destroy lives. Users can get arrested," Harrison said.
Ice's training will take three months.
"When we train the dogs we use scent boxes. They have holes on top. We put drugs inside the box and we put in his toy he likes. So he recognizes the scent with the toy. Every time he alerts and sits, he gets rewarded with his toy," Harrison said.
Eventually, Ice will search for drugs in classrooms, backpacks, and vehicles on school grounds. His presence will hopefully scare potential drug dealers and users, while putting parents at ease.
The dog will only be used on middle-school and high-school campuses.
