City Wants Fewer Auto Dealerships On Alameda

EL PASO, Texas —

Some city officials want to reduce the number of auto dealerships on Alameda in an effort to revitalize the state highway.

The concept of beautifying Alameda was born when the Medical Center of the Americas began to pick up steam. The city is getting ready to conduct a land-use study on a 10 mile stretch of Alameda from Boone Street to Americas Avenue. City representative Emma Acosta says ideally the city wants to create a zoning overlay that would restrict the number of car lots on Alameda. In other words, if a car lot moves out the zoning overlay would not allow another car lot to move in.

KFOX talked to one auto dealership general manager who said it's not fair.

"It is wrong. You just can't close any part of the city to a certain segment. You just can't do that. It's been tried before and it's impossible," said Jose Perez, the general manager of Arrow Discount Automotive.

Acosta said city officials would like to see another type of industry created on Alameda that would match medicine and health care, rather than auto shops. The next meeting on the land-use study will take place on Aug. 6 at Seville Recreation Center, 6700 Alameda from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
