City reps closer to redrawing district boundaries

By Veronica Macias

EL PASO, Texas —

Representatives are closer to deciding on the final maps for the city.

"We didn't come to a final conclusion; some of the council members have their values expressed," said Steve Ortega, city representative.

Those concerns were about losing territory and not keeping current districts intact.

"Make sure that each district has the same amount of people in their district and they are each equally representative," said city Rep. Courtney Niland.

Others expressed concern over diversity.

"You pit some of the wealthiest, actually the wealthiest, against the poorest ZIP code, not just in the city but nationally," said city Rep. Eddie Holguin.

The decision will be made in another meeting held in the next coming weeks.
