EL PASO, Texas —
A city representative wants to keep El Pasoans from falling into debt when it comes to what many consider predatory loans.
At a special City Council meeting Thursday, Rep. Susie Byrd will urge the mayor and council to begin the process of adopting an ordinance to curb the harmful effects of payday loans and car title loans.
Byrd said other cities have similar ordinances protecting citizens from high interest rates and she hopes El Paso follows in their footsteps.
"Essentially, the provisions put in the ordinance, they're pretty simple," Byrd said. "One, to make the loans more affordable to the family so capping the amount can be lent based on a family's income."
The provisions would also ensure that borrowers are able to pay off the principal and not be stuck paying interest for years.
The special meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m.
