EL PASO, Texas —
Jesus Avila and his family are taking matters into their own hands. They're building a trench to direct water away from their property.
"What we're doing here is a ditch. Every time it rains, water comes around the back from the construction company. It makes a big puddle in the back," said Avila.
Avila just heard about talks between the city of Socorro and the County of El Paso and its pursuit to look for funds to develop a series of ponding areas to prevent the flooding.
"It's about time. I've been here for eight years. It was two years ago when we got the big flood that destroyed the street over there," said Avila.
Just three weeks ago, Socorro residents woke up to water running down their streets similar to the flooding in 2006.
Some Socorro residents endured the flooding and water damage in 2006. They've modified their homes to prevent that. A home on Cielo Azul Street has sand bags stacked up to stop water from going inside the property.
"Unfortunately the process is very slow and Army Corps of Engineers have been surveying for five years," said Socorro Mayor Trini Lopez.
But for residents, the solution can't come quick enough.
"This is a problem that's has to be fixed, and fast," said Avila.
The entities are looking for $30 million to $40 million to build ponding areas to prevent flooding.
