City of El Paso
EL PASO, Texas —
During a news conference held by Mayor John Cook to discuss the voter-approved bonds and downtown ballpark, hints at what could happen next to Cohen Stadium were mentioned.
Two days after voters passed all three propositions, city officials spoke in front of the media about what happens now in what she called a new era for El Paso.
There is no intention to abandon Cohen Stadium, leaving it as a blight for northeast residents, said City Manager Joyce Wilson.
She said she had been approached by a privateĀ investor to bring an attraction venue, such as a water or amusement park, near Cohen Stadium. The attraction venue would not replace the stadium, said Wilson.
In addition, city officials have also had conversations with El Paso Community College to partner up and convert Cohen Stadium into an amateur baseball complex.
The current lease for Cohen Stadium expires in 2016, but Wilson said she and other city officials have spoken to the Tiguas about vacating the property owned by the city of El Paso before then.
Wilson's reasoning for ending the lease earlier were attributed to the financial benefit for both the city of El Paso and the Tiguas.
Wilson said Cohen Stadium, a 50-acre lot, is a good location because of its proximity to the highway and Fort Bliss.
The next steps, would be studying similar projects in other cities, said Wilson.
She added that the mayor and the northeast city rep, Carl Robinson, have been briefed about this information.
