EL PASO, Texas —
A fax sent to KFOX from an anonymous 911 call taker outlined more problems at the emergency center. It read that on average 700 calls are not answered. It said the center has a total of 18 phone lines, 12 dedicated for calls coming from cell phones and six for land lines.
KFOX showed City Manager Joyce Wilson the fax.
"It says absolutely nothing, nothing factually correct. Anonymous fax are exactly what they are. It's a cowardly way to raise concerns without really going through the legitimate process," she said.
Wilson said the city has spent more time and energy dealing with the 911 communication center in 2010 than any agency in the El Paso city government. She said changes are being made or have been made to address the issues.
Some of those changes include upgrading the Computer Aided Dispatch system, creating a non-emergency call center, which has diverted 20 percent of call volume and 19 employees have been hired and started their training.
"All these changes collectively are creating a lot of anxiety on the part of the operations and employees, but for any employee to say we are jeopardizing safety, it's blatantly false and frankly irresponsible," said Wilson. KFOX asked the Fire Department for the number of calls to fire dispatch and the number of calls not answered, but they weren't able to get that information for us Monday.
The Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch averages about 1,000 calls per day from Las Cruces and outside counties. And they average about 30 unanswered calls.
