City Hall set for April demolition

EL PASO, Texas —

Despite numerous efforts to save City Hall, a demolition date has been set for April 14.

City officials said the building will be imploded at 9 a.m., the day after the ASARCO smokestacks' demolition.

"We certainty didn't want to pick that date, and we didn't want to choose that date because it puts a real strain on your public safety people to try to manage both of those events," said Alan Shubert, city's engineer.

City Hall is being demolished to make way for a multimillion-dollar Triple-A baseball stadium that sparked debates, petitions and movements to keep that from happening.

The latest hurdle was cleared last month when Travis County District Court Judge Tim Sulak ruled against granting an injunction to two separate petitioners aiming to save the building and prevent the construction of a downtown baseball stadium without voter approval. One of the groups is led by Sal Gomez and Carl Starr, the other by Jesus Ochoa and former Mayor Ray Salazar.

Sulak ruled to allow the city to issue the bonds for the construction of the ballpark.

City officials said the biggest concern is the dust, and said they will get rid of the asbestos before the demolition.

"We know exactly where the asbestosĀ is in the building...good news is that most of it over the period of years has been abated, said Shubert.

Interstate 10 will be shut down during the demolition, however the time period of the shutdown has not been announced.

There will also be security to prevent people from barricading themselves in the building.
